Except for the first Comma Splice button and the Comma Splice--subsequent
button, all the other punctuation buttons must be used in conjunction with either
the delete 
or the insert 
button.
The delete button creates the following:

The second half of the comment (and, importantly, the closing square bracket) is
supplied by any of the other punctuation buttons. For example, after clicking
"insert," 
you might then click the "comma" button 
to get the following:
